Swami Vivekananda, a great philosopher, thinker and visionary with many virtues said “May we help one poor man seeing Shiva in him without thinking his caste, colour and creed”. It is in consonance with his teachings “Nar Sewa Naryan Sewa” and “Serve the Lord coming in the shape of Diseased”, a Society named “Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission - Jammu” was founded on 12th of January 1970 on the eve of 107th birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda ji and later on it was registered as an NGO. One of the aims and objectives of the society was to provide and spread knowledge of health and hygiene to all sections of the Society irrespective of caste, creed, colour, religion and language by setting up a Hospital. A humble beginning was made in this direction by starting a small Dispensary in one of the rooms of “Home for Aged and Infirm, Ved Mandir, Ambphalla Jammu”

In order to implement the aims of rendering “Total Health Care” to the ailing humanity especially to those who are less fortunate, downtrodden, under privileged and belong to weaker sections of the society and with the active cooperation extended by the Philanthropists, Social and Cultural Organizations and General Public of Jammu, the construction of the hospital building started on 12th January, 1977 with the laying down of foundation stone by Pt Prem Nath Dogra Ji which was commissioned and inaugurated in September,1978 by then Health Minister S. Harbhajan Singh. Now it has grown into a full fledged 40 bedded hospital equipped with modern facilities, backed by a team of competent and dedicated doctors and spread over an area of 10 kanals of land namely Swami Vivekananda MedicalMission Charitable Hospital (SVMMH), having its own building with all modern type of Equipment, infrastructure and competent manpower. The hospital has been registered under Jammu and Kashmir Nursing Homes and Clinical Establishments under Registration No. 0102101107. The mission places on record the honorary services rendered by Dr. Ram Lal Nargotra, Physican Specialist and Dr. Shanta Malhotra Senior. Gynaecologist at the initial stages of setting up of this hospital. The mission of Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission - Jammu is to serve the ailing distressed human beings on charitable basis to achieve the spirit of Swami Vivekanand "Serve Man Serve God"
