Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission Charitable Hospital, Amphalla, Jammu (SVMMCH) , in collaboration with SOTTO J&K, organized a meaningful Eye Donation Awareness Rally on September 6, 2025, aimed at spreading awareness about the noble cause of eye donation and encouraging people to pledge their eyes for the gift of sight.

The rally began from Indira Gandhi Government Dental College, Jammu, at 9:00 AM and concluded at the premises of SVMMCH. It was formally flagged off by Prof. (Dr.) Parveen Akhter Lone, Principal and Dean, IGGDC Jammu, along with B.S. Jamwal (Secretary, SVMMCH) and Mohan Singh Chouhan (Treasurer, SVMMCH). A large gathering of doctors, medical and dental students, hospital staff, volunteers, and the general public actively participated. Doctors &Students from ASCOMS also joined with enthusiasm, carrying the message of eye donation to the wider community.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Parveen Akhter Lone stressed that eye donation is a duty of compassion and a legacy of service. She urged students and young doctors to champion this cause so that society develops a culture where pledging eyes becomes an act of social responsibility.

Dr. Suruchi Gupta, Senior Eye Consultant, SVMMCH, described eye donation as the most profound service one can render to humanity. She explained that corneal blindness is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in India, and every pledge has the power to restore dignity, independence, and light in another person’s life. She appealed that eyes should not go to cremation or burial when they can continue to live on by giving sight to others.

Dr. Pallvi Sharma, Eye Consultant, SVMMCH, highlighted that a single eye donation can restore the vision of two individuals and give them a new chance at life.

“The rally also witnessed the active involvement of Dr. Yash Karsyal (Assistant Medical Superintendent), Dr. S.L.Fotra (Senior Pathologist), S. Iqbal Deep Singh (Manager), Sh. Pawan Sharma, and Sh. C.L. Koul of SVMMCH, who extended their full support to the campaign.”

While the rally was culminated at Svmmch hospital where it was received by Sh.Amar Chand Gupta Sr. Vice President and Sh. B.B Gupta General Secretary.

Dr. Sachin Gupta, Member Management Committee, SVMMCH, reiterated the mission’s guiding principle of “Nar Sewa Narayan Sewa” and called upon society to take noble pledge so that no one remains in the darkness of blindness when sight can be restored through generosity.

It is worth mentioning that SVMM Hospital has already performed 4 successful corneal transplants, restoring sight to patients who were living in darkness. After GMC Jammu and MH Udhampur, SVMMCH is the only hospital in Jammu performing corneal transplants, underscoring its vital role in specialized eye care. The hospital appeals to the citizens of Jammu & Kashmir take pledge to donate their eyes and support this noble cause.
